Music limits the feeling of dementia patients with depression
A new analysis of scientific findings revealed that music therapy might limit the feeling of depression and tension among patients with dementia
The researchers found that music therapy might also improve the morbidity of people with the disease
However, the report, published in the journal Cochrane Library, noted that the research team found no benefit for this type of treatment when it comes to cognitive and behavioral problems such as agitation and aggressive behavior
"Even though the benefits of music therapy are not great," said Jenny van deer Steen, head of the research team and researcher at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Leiden Medical Center in the Netherlands. Is very important in patients with dementia and their caregivers, as well as maintaining a certain level at a time when the patient expected to see a decline
"These results are closely related to the quality of life and may be more relevant than improving or delaying cognitive decline in patients who are in the study, most of whom are in care homes," she added
To conduct the study, the team collected data from 21 smaller randomized trials involving 1097 patients
These patients received either music-based therapies that included at least five sessions, regular care or some other activity with or without music
Participants in the study suffer from dementia of varying degrees of severity, mostly patients living in care institutions
Seven studies provided individual music therapy, while others provided group therapy
Dr Alexander Plantlet, associate professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, said the new findings could have a significant impact on dementia patients
It is not surprising that music therapy may help patients with dementia
It known that the centers of music reception in the brain interfere with the centers of feelings and those that deal with language
When you play a song that dates back to someone's young days, it is possible to evoke the memories of the first time the person listened to him or her. This indicates the need for a specialized style, not one song style that suits everyone
